In response to the growing threat of cyberattacks on educational institutions, Iowa Congressman Zach Nunn has proposed the bipartisan Enhancing K–12 Cybersecurity Act. This initiative comes in the wake of numerous schools, including those in Des Moines, Iowa, and West Virginia, having to cancel classes due to ransomware attacks. The Act, co-led by Representative Doris Matsui, aims to equip schools with the latest information on cyberattacks and prevention strategies.
Key components of the Act include the creation of the School Cybersecurity Information Exchange, a publicly accessible website offering best practices, training, and lessons tailored to the needs of K-12 schools. The site will also feature a database of cybersecurity tools and services funded by the federal government, as well as those recommended for purchase with state and local government funding.
The Act also establishes a Cybersecurity Incident Registry for school-related incidents, providing schools with insights into risks and best practices. Additionally, the proposed legislation creates the K-12 Cybersecurity Technology Improvement Program, which aims to reduce risks and threats to K-12 schools by providing tools, services, and training opportunities. The Act has received endorsement from six national education organizations, including the NAESP and NASSP.
