The cybercriminal group known as Anonymous Sudan is reportedly behind the attacks that disrupted several Microsoft services earlier this month. In a security blog post, Microsoft confirmed that the disruptions experienced from June 5, affecting platforms like Outlook email and the OneDrive cloud app, were caused by hacker activity. Technically, there was no breach of Microsoft’s systems. The attack was of the “Ddos” type, a campaign that uses a wide range of devices and computers to ‘bombard’ targeted services with requests, causing temporary unavailability. “We have found no evidence that customer data has been breached or compromised,” the company stated.
Anonymous Sudan began conducting cyberattacks in early 2023, focusing on countries interested in Sudanese political issues. However, some researchers believe the group is actually a branch of the Kremlin-affiliated Killnet gang, using the reference to Sudan as a false flag to mislead analysts. This connection became more apparent when Anonymous Sudan expressed a desire to form a “Darknet Parliament” with Killnet and Revil, other pro-Russian hacker teams. As their first order of business, the alliance threatened the Swift international interbank system, which the US and EU cut Russia off from in response to the invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
