eSentire has uncovered the identity of the second person behind the Golden Chickens malware. Codenamed Jack, he is from Bucharest, Romania and is the creator of Golden Chickens. Evidence suggests that he owns a business that imports and exports fruits and vegetables.
Jack’s online presence can be traced back to 2008 when he was 15 years old, and he has since developed several malicious programs such as Voyer, FlyCatcher, and CON. In 2012, he was known in the cybercriminal community for not providing adequate support to customers who purchased his products.
Jack is thought to have worked with “Chuck from Montreal” between late 2012 and 2013 to get a fresh start. In 2017, Jack released a tool called VenomKit, which has since developed into the Golden Chickens MaaS. This malware has been used by Cobalt Group and FIN6 in their financially-motivated campaigns.
Additionally, eSentire has uncovered the identities of Jack’s family members, including his wife, mother, and two sisters.
