Google has announced its plan to phase out third-party cookies in its Chrome browser, starting in the first quarter of 2024. In the fourth quarter of 2023, developers will be able to simulate this process for a select subset of users (up to 10%). To make sure that the proposals do not give Google an unfair advantage, the implementation is being overseen by the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Privacy Sandbox is a two-part project for web and Android that aims to limit covert tracking while still providing relevant content and ads in a privacy-respecting way. Testing of Privacy Sandbox on Android is already in progress, and the APIs will be available to all Chrome 115 users by the end of July 2023. The idea is to infer rough interest signals on the device based on the user’s browsing activity for a one-week period, and give users control over their changing interests. Google’s goal is to completely turn off third-party cookies in Chrome in the second half of 2024, although this timeline is subject to change.
