Ransomware Attack Hits Rhode Island Data System

Rhode Island’s health and benefits system, RIBridges, has suffered a significant data breach following a ransomware attack last month. Cybercriminals responsible for the attack have reportedly released stolen files on the dark web after the state refused to meet ransom demands. The breach potentially affects several state benefits programs, including Medicaid, SNAP, and others that serve over 300,000 residents.

Governor Dan McKee’s office announced that officials had anticipated the data’s release and prepared by launching a statewide outreach campaign to help residents protect their personal information. Recommended measures include using multifactor authentication, credit monitoring, and signing up for fraud alerts.

The ransomware attack was first identified on December 5 by Deloitte, Rhode Island’s IT vendor, and confirmed on December 10. The affected benefits programs account for more than 40% of the state’s annual budget, highlighting the scale of the impact.

State IT teams are currently analyzing the leaked files to assess the extent of the breach and identify individuals affected. Governor McKee emphasized the importance of collective patience and vigilance as Rhode Island continues to address this cybersecurity challenge.
