FBI Releases LockBit Decryptors for Ransomware Victims

Over 7,000 decryption keys for the LockBit ransomware have been made available by the FBI, part of their ongoing efforts to disrupt the notorious ransomware gang. FBI Cyber Division Assistant Director Bryan Vorndran announced this at the 2024 Boston Conference on Cyber Security. The keys’ recovery follows the FBI’s takedown of much of LockBit’s infrastructure in February, a joint effort with international partners.

LockBit, responsible for over 2,400 global attacks, including 1,800 in the U.S., has continued to target victims, despite its disruption. The U.S. Department of Justice recently identified and charged Dimitry Yuryevich Khoroshev, suspected of administering LockBit.

Vorndran emphasized the importance of holding on to encrypted data, as decryption keys may become available after infrastructure disruptions. He also highlighted the FBI’s successful operations against other cyber threats, urging cooperation between private companies, nonprofits, academia, and authorities to combat cybercrime effectively.

The FBI’s approach aims to mitigate victims’ losses and encourage information sharing within sectors to enhance cybersecurity resilience. The agency has also worked with cyber insurance providers to streamline options and decision-making during and after attacks.
