Cyber Attack Hits Spanish Defense Firm

A cyber attack targeted Santa Barbara Systems, a Spanish unit of General Dynamics, which is refurbishing Leopard tanks for Ukraine. The pro-Russian NoName hacking group claimed responsibility for the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which took down the company’s website. DDoS attacks work by overwhelming targeted servers with a high volume of internet traffic, effectively knocking them offline and disrupting their operations. General Dynamics is still investigating the cause, but reported that all European operations are running normally.

NoName, on the Telegram messaging service, boasted about the attack, stating, “We sent our DDoS-missiles against websites in russophobic Spain.” The group frequently targets nations supporting Ukraine. This incident follows NATO’s recent accusation that Russia is escalating hybrid attacks on member states’ companies and infrastructure, a claim Russia denies.

Santa Barbara Systems is known for assembling heavy military vehicles like Leopard tanks for the Spanish army. The company has been involved in refurbishing Spain’s mothballed Leopard tanks for delivery to Ukraine. Spain recently pledged 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion) in military support for Ukraine, including 19 Leopard 2A4 tanks.
