Organized by the Trend Micro Zero-Day Initiative, the Pwn2Own Automotive event followed a similar format to the annual Pwn2Own hacking events. The best hacking teams globally competed against pre-determined tech targets, using previously unknown ‘zero-day’ exploits. The event exclusively targeted electric vehicles and associated systems and services.
During the event, hackers and security researchers faced stringent time limits to successfully hack their assigned targets. They were rewarded with substantial cash payments for demonstrating newly discovered vulnerabilities and providing technical details to the affected vendors. Points were also allocated towards the overall Masters of Pwn leaderboard.
Pwn2Own Automotive 2024 awarded bounties worth $1,323,750 for 49 unique zero-days exploited over three days. Team Synacktiv, the Masters of Pwn (Automotive) 2024, achieved notable successes, including hacking the Tesla Modem and Infotainment System, earning $100,000 for each exploit. They also compromised various other targets, including the JuiceBox 40 Smart EV Charging Station, ChargePoint Home Flex, Ubiquiti Connect EV Station, Automotive Grade Linux, and Sony XAV-AX5500 infotainment system.
