Microsoft has reported that a China-based hacking group, identified as Storm-0558, has breached government-linked email accounts. The group gained access to email accounts linked to 25 organizations, including Western European government agencies and unclassified email accounts linked to the U.S. government. The breach was detected following customer complaints about abnormal mail activity. Microsoft’s executive vice president of security, Charlie Bell, stated that the adversary is focused on espionage, such as gaining access to email systems for intelligence collection.
China has dismissed these accusations as “disinformation” aimed at diverting attention from U.S. cyber activities. Wang Wenbin, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, claimed that the U.S. is the world’s largest hacker empire conducting the most cyber theft.
In response to the breach, Microsoft has taken measures to deal with the attack and has informed affected customers. The tech giant is working with the Department of Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to guard against such attacks and continues to monitor Storm-0558’s activities. The investigation into the breach is ongoing, with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stating that further breaches were prevented and more information is being gathered in consultation with Microsoft.
