A report by DNV, titled “Energy Cyber Priority for 2023,” highlights the urgent need for energy organizations to enhance their cybersecurity efforts. Despite growing awareness of the threats to IT and OT systems, the energy industry’s response has been insufficient, with challenges such as underinvestment, skills shortages, and poor collaboration persisting. The study, based on a survey of 600 global energy professionals, comes on the heels of a reported Russian cyber attack on the US Department of Energy.
Simultaneously, DNV is bolstering its cybersecurity capabilities through the acquisition of Finland-based Nixu, which will be combined with DNV’s existing services to create a significant cybersecurity business in Europe. The survey identifies cybersecurity as the fourth greatest business risk, behind operational, safety, and financial risks.
While new regulations are expected to stimulate cybersecurity investment, DNV warns that some companies may be unprepared due to a lack of awareness. The report recommends improving communication and collaboration, building capacity, preparing for new regulations, and recognizing the strategic necessity of cybersecurity in the energy industry’s future. It also emphasizes the need to attract essential cybersecurity talent to the sector.
